Akins has been in Congress for 12 years, and this is his shot at the Senate. If he walks away he's done. There is nothing that anyone in the GOP can offer him that would replace this chance at being a Senator. He can't walk away, no way. He won't get to run for Governor, or Senate again ... this is it. He walks now and it is the political abyss for him ... It's over.
