The main problem with the South is that because Abraham Lincoln was humane to the Confederates after the war they never accepted the fact that they actually lost the war. After the Civil War states that seceded should have been provisionally allowed back into the Union with full acceptance being contingent on full integration of African Americans into their societies as equals. That didn't happen and we are still suffering from Abraham Lincoln's kindness now.



And when you consider that Lincoln was assassinated by Confederate Sympathizers you can see that turning the other cheek in terms of the Confederates didn't pay dividends for him either.
