I think if we were to lean hard on the Saudis they may cough up information on Americans that were involved in the attacks as well. The "Truther" alarm goes off when the possibility of American complicity in the heinous act of September 11th, 2001is proposed, based on a false choice presented on who was the culprit.
The choice, as presented, has been either Bin Laden and company, from their comfort in a cave in Afghanistan, or a plot within the United States Government.
DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! TRUTHER ALERT!!!
Please, it is intellectually dishonest to limit the scope of possibility like that. Perhaps the Saudis are involved. The US Government? No. Another possibility, however, is someone retained a Private Sector Intelligence Firm to pull off the logistics of the attack. I rail about Reagan's EO12333 that allowed the outsourcing of clandestine operations ... wet work ... to Private Sector Intelligence Contractors. According to Ron Suskind's "Way of the World", 70% of CIA clandestine operations are outsourced to contractors. Contractors that are composed of former members of Intel and the Military from around the world. Non-aligned operatives.
If we are going to investigate the Saudis, and we should, we need to also determine the relationship of Bin Laden, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, and other members of Al Qaeda to private sector intelligence firms.
