I don't think we can dismiss ego when considering Robert's decision either. I know my perception of the Supreme Court has been Roberts, as Chief Justice, being more-or-less a figurehead with the real control of the court being in Scalia's hands. With this action, Roberts showed his colleagues on the court and the world, who was boss.
And if you ask whether individuals with such lofty positions as Justices on the Supreme Court would stoop to petty interpersonal ego play ... the answer is "of course."
