Look, this isn't all Obama. What has to be understood is that even though there are Liberals in the Democratic Caucus it still behaves like a Conservative body. The reason the Democrats can say they are "Liberal" is because compared the the Republicans, who have moved to a hard right Reactionary position, they are, but the Democratic Party is not a Liberal or Progressive Party. According to a Politico article from March, 2009, President Obama declared himself a New Democrat ... that is not a Liberal or Progressive alignment. What that is is declaring oneself a Corporate, Blue Dog, DLC Democrat. In that light, how far Obama was willing to bend in the Republicans direction makes perfect sense, unfortunately.
Obama declaring himself New Democrat isn't a crime, but it does go to show that in order to curry favor with the dominant force in the Democrat Party he had to move to the Right, not the Left.
