Authoritarians cannot apologize. Apology is a sign of weakness for them. Once they make a mistake in reasoning they are committed to it because they are incapable of defending most of the positions they take. Once they apologize for one error it opens everything else they believe in to review by their own followers. This is the problem for Rush, just as it is for Geraldo. The power Authoritarians command emanates from the aura of infallibility they present. When they find themselves against the wall they can't retreat, they have to double down until they are no longer questioned.
