This Right Wing plot goes all the way back to the 1930's when the Right failed in its attempted coup against FDR. Back then the American Right Wingers planned on installing Douglas MacArthur as leader, but approached Smedley Butler instead, because the Bonus Army Vets admired him and hated MacArthur, and the Right Wingers needed the muscle of the Bonus Army vets to take down FDR. Of course, Smedley Butler blew the whistle on the plot and it never came to pass. In the wake of the plot FDR tricked MacArthur into leaving the United States to become Field Marshal of the Philippine Commonwealth ... ruining his shot at running against FDR for President. Is it any surprise that members of MacArthur's inner circle went on to become founding members of the John Birch Society along with the father of the Koch Brothers, Fred Koch? Is it any surprise that one of the donors of Ari Fleicher's now defunct Freedom's Watch 501(c)(4) lobbying group was Howard Leach, whose business partner at Leach McMicking Co was the nephew of Joseph McMicking, another member of MacArthur's staff? It is very interesting how these pieces fit together, and should give a thoughtful person pause when considered.
