The President's Social Security Plan Is a Really, Really Bad Idea

Including Chained CPI in the Budget was really a cruel trick President Obama pulled on fellow Democrats (In addition to seniors, veterans and others who rely on Social Security for their very survival). President Obama isn't going to appear on another ballot, but his Democratic Party colleagues in the House and Senate face the voters in 2014. The Democrats cutting Social Security benefits is a gift to the Republicans who want to retain the House and takeover the Senate. You don't compromise on core principles ... cutting Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits is compromising on core principles. I wish that President Obama would occasionally forget he is a lawyer, then he might stop painting himself into a corner like this in his ardor to get a deal.

And, no, in this case I don't think the President is playing chess while the rest of us play checkers ... in this case I simply think the President and his advisers blew it when they could least afford to.

The President's Social Security Plan Is a Really, Really Bad Idea

Think of the double plus for Wall Street of Privatized Social Security.

First, they get a constant, mandated influx of revenue into their dicey, fraud-based markets.

Second, the Privatized Wall Street version of Social Security would be a perfect hostage for a Financial Services Industry that relies on securities kiting, wealth counterfeiting though derivatives and CDS contracts, and outright Bernie Madoff style Ponzis to simulate prosperity, for, never again, could an un-bailed out market crash be tolerated for it would immediately dump millions upon millions of Americans into poverty. The US Government would be obligated to cover Wall Street's bad bets, for it would be a National Security issue not too.

And, you're correct, Obama is tight with Wall Street, for no individual would ascend to the office of the President without that being the case .. they wouldn't make it that far in contemporary America.

Tomorrow's Presidential Budget: Questions of Judgment?

A friend of mine, who blogs here too, Michael Gene Sullivan, made a very clear point on the budget negotiation on a Facebook post. He said:

"What Obama doesn't seem to get yet is that A: the other side hates him, and will never agree to anything he comes up with, and B: the compromise between a good, workable idea and a bad, unworkable idea is still a bad idea. If one side wants the people to have beef stew, and the other wants to feed the people shit stew if you mix the two you get - shit stew."

Is The War On Drugs Nearing An End?

I wouldn't be surprised if voter disenfranchisement is behind the drug war felony convictions, which effect minorities and the poor predominantly. No better way for Republicans to leverage the electoral game to their benefit than by taking the voting rights away from groups that tend to be politically hostile to them with felony drug convictions.
