Republicans are unpopular, at war with every non-white-conservative-male constituency in the United States, and are well aware of the fact their 2010 "landslide" was due to only 4% of the voters showing up at the polls. You are going to see a turnout from Democrats in 2014 like in a Presidential election cycle, and the only thing the GOP has going for them is gerrymandering, and voter suppression laws ... without that they are in the wilderness. In short, the Republicans recognize if they don't cull the extremism of their base and tack toward moderation they are doomed.
