I think Gingrich is making a couple of interesting calculations here. First, it is no secret that Romney hasn't charmed a large swath of the Republican base. Newt may accurately view himself as a protest vote for the disgruntled Republican voter. Secondly, and more importantly, I don't think Gingrich has forgiven Romney for what he did to him in Iowa, and I think Newt might be purely in this for vengeance. I think Newt knows he will never be the Republican nominee, and I also think he doesn't care ... this feud with Romney is on a whole different level.
