I remember one review of John Sayles "Amigo", about the Philippine American War, where the film was excoriated by the Critic for being anachronistic due to Sayles' invoking of the idea of a "Hearts and Minds" military campaign occurring in 1900 that he claimed was a veiled reference to Vietnam. When in fact, the technique of a "Hearts and Minds Campaign" originated in the Philippine American War. That wasn't the first time I saw a Film Critic flail a film due to their own ignorance of the subject matter, and the treatment of "The Hobbit" reminds me of that.
