"There's no way to put the mask back on. We've got to face the truth."
You're correct, Professor Reich, we do.
The United States has been in a Depression since the crash in 2008. Not recession, Depression. All that TARP, the Stimulus. QE1 and QE2 have done is masked the symptoms. Thankfully for the American people today, unlike our contemporaries in the 1930's we still enjoy the tatters of a Social Safety Net installed after the Great Depression to mitigate the pain. Food Stamps replace Soup Lines. Social Security prevents the streets from being awash in homeless children and elderly. Thanks to people who lived the misery before, our parents, grandparents, and great-grand parents, their suffering hasn't become ours. Yet.
This Social Safety Net is a double edged sword, however, for the wealthy, politicians, bankers, and businessmen can hide their crimes from the people behind these programs even as they conspire to dismantle them.
We are in a Depression, and as long as we don't approach the situation in the dramatic ways the FDR Administration did in the 30's, it is going to be a Depression that deepens and extends in duration until we all, most definitely, feel it.
