I'm not a fan of any Republicans, but Dick Lugar is arguably the type of Republican the party sorely lacks today ... a Statesman. I remember that Lugar was in the middle of the People Power crisis in the Philippines in 1986. He was trying to be the American voice of reason to President Marcos during that period of time. I have no idea what influence Lugar had, but I do know that the People Power transition from Marcos to Aquino was one of the most peaceful in history. It could have easily become a bloodbath with the police and military resources Marcos had at his disposal. The ousting of Marcos was far more sedate than that of Mubarak. Dick Lugar has his quality, and is the type of Republican that should be leading the party, not trailing a Teabagger.
Moderate Republicans today have made the same miscalculation, as Liberal Republicans did in the 70's. Thinking if they just go along with the radicals of their party there will be a time when they can regain influence. No, moderate Republicans, as we see here with Lugar, are being purged.
