After reading the section at the beginning of Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" on the work of Dr Ewen Cameron, I realized that torture has more than one potential "benefit" to the torturers. In the weakened aspect it can be used to extract dubious confession
s and informatio
n from the subject of the torture. But the real value, and the value it has in its applicatio
n dozens of times on an individual
, such as the high value Al Qeada detainees in US Custody, is one of destroying the individual
's sense of self and rendering memories useless. When you hear that Khalid Sheikh Mohammad was waterboard
ed over 100 times, the question is this: Was the goal to extract critical informatio
n, or to destroy memories?
