There was a lesson to be learned by Rove and his Billionaires from what transpired with Meg Whitman's run for California Governor in 2010. Whitman dumped a ton of money into that race, and saturated the airwaves with ads for months in California until they had no more lasting impact on the electorate than Muzak in an elevator. Governor Brown spent a fraction of the money Whitman did, and he won the election.
This was the same dynamic at play here. Money is not a panacea in every political situation. Rove and his billionaires wanted to believe the dynamic was different in their case than in Whitman's and they suffered the same fate.
